How to remove carpet?
« on: 30 May 2011, 20:52 »
I while back I posted a thread about rusted drainage bungs under the rear floor panels.

The time has come to get the welding work done. To reduce costs at the garage I am going to remove the rear carpets myself.

I was wondering whether someone can post an idiots guide on how to remove the rear carpets please so I can get to the floor panel.

I know its prob an easy job but I dont want to remove trim etc unnecessarily

Thanks is advance

Luke

Alright i'd start by taking the front seats out quick and easy both out in 10 mins little pin at front underneath then slide back and lift out  Then i believe you need to remove the centre bit with the back ashtray in screws under the tray. From there you should be able to work it out theres a few plastic round disks near the back seats you need to unscrew from memory should be an hours work first time hope this helps

Under the rear bench there r some round plug things pop them out, and take the seat runner ends off and the side strips below the rear cards or doors if its a 5 door.
This from memory but its quite simple to see that needs to come out. May even have to take the front seats out.
May have missed something though.

Hope this jumple of sentances has helped in someway

as above but you also need to remove the allen bolts for the rear bench as the carpet is under them too

If you're also getting the front bungs done then you'll also have to remove the front silencing material that covers the entire front section of the car (underneath the pedals) as it blocks off one of the bung holes. In my case this was extremely soggy from water getting in (well in both cases - I'm currently sorting out my second golfs floor).

There's a very annoying plug which takes a 13mm or 14mm or so allen key to undo, didn't have one so the first golf I had to use long nosed pliers to twist it round to unscrew as it was so well screwed down - I now need to sand the rather rough chewed look to it. Second golf just unscrewed by hand, so hope for that kind :)

My first golfs floor should be being welded this week (it's the worst of the two) and I was told that it would help if I were to cut away the underseal from around the holes (what little I could do I used scissors for).

I'd already removed the silencing material that VW use over the floorplans using a scraper and heatgun so you may wish to do that.

I also removed the pretensioners etc but I'd personally leave that to a mechanic (as a matter of fact in removing the passenger seatbelt I accidentally dropped the shoulder section down through one of the bung holes and onto the ground outside, holding a pretensioner while trying to pull a seatbelt back through a hole in a chassis is not my idea of fun!).

Chief :)
