intermittent power loss
« on: 29 May 2011, 18:38 »
hi all have got a 1989 mk2 digifant pb 1.8 8v with 104000 on the clock, recently had a cam belt change and a new distributor fitted , also new plugs, leads, ignition amplifier and idle valve and fuel filter.
i now have a problem starting fron cold, it takes a few goes ; it used to be instant.. when warmed up it starts straight away but the tick over blips up slightly, when accelerating it has a flat feeling as if there is no power then goes as normal and today when on the fast right hand curve on the m53 (70 mph max, honest officer) it started to stutter as if the tank was empty but resumed as normal when back on the straight
this is driving me nuts any help would be great thanks

Check the wires/plug to the idle control valve, have had this problem before.

In fact, check the wires to everything! Earth points can cause problems aswel as the ignition coil.

oh dear not a good day for the gti

have checked every wire and connection all good , all the earths are fine have had a line from the battery neg to all relevant ignition parts and made no difference

have had the car on a SUN dyno for all settings and set up as per rubjonny's PB Digifant list ...

checked ignition amp, ok, new coil, new disi, new leads have had ecu tested its good, new temp sensors, also looked at the maf, working well,

have checked the idle valve its working ok, and all plugs are new bosch items

the only thing that stops the tick over from jumping is removing the top throttle sensor wiring plug , but that increases the tick over to 1400rpm.

when plugged in the car has a flat spot up to 3000 or so and also occasionally feels as if it will just stop dead when accelerating as if the engine is suddenly off ie 0 revs the goes again

my mechanic mate is at a loss any ideas will be gratefully received

Had a smilar problem. The wiring to blue senser was broke and barely touching which pulls the ignition timing back and made the car gutless. After this it still wasnt great so i started pokoing round the ecu with it running and got sparks from the cage. Pulled ignition amp up off the ecu cage with it running and it ran sweet so i changed it and all is well. Dont know if the blue sensor wiring had an effect on it doing this or it was coincidental.
Took 4 months to find this out.

hi all have replaced the blue temp sensor with a new vw item also o-ring and the retaining
clip, which is now made of plastic

got it up to 80oC unplugged it took it to over 3000rpm to clear ecu plugged it back and no difference at all

it now idles between 840 -1200 rpm very jerky/stuttering as if the engine will stop and when driving is constantly holding back as if i was a learner with kangaroo petrol

unplugging the blue sender has no effect as to the position of the idle its bad in and out i think i will have to take it to my local vw specialists ..... there goes the overtime cash

just to mention that we did try another ignition amp off a vw but made no difference ; bolted down or not , and the wiring to the blue sender feels tight ;it will not pull out and sadly no difference when being moved either when plugged in

hope its not terminal .........................................................

finally managed to get my 1989 digi gti back from the garage ,they said that some of the wiring loom

had overheated for an unknown reason and was shorting out between two wires

this then caused the new distributor to burn its terminals and rotor and the result was the very poor

running ,misfiring and engine stalling issues

its now running well and no issues at all ........ well apart from some slight rust

no change there then

i'd almost forgotten how amazing the handling is .......
