buying a car without the V5
« on: 28 May 2011, 17:25 »
Iv been looking at a 1.8t mk4 for sale and im thinking off buying it, however he tells me he cant find the v5 so hes sent off for a new one he does however have the new keeper supplement from when he bought it, the manual, the MOT and some older mots and receipts. Its taxed till october.

Iv done a HPI check and it came out fine. He seems genuine.
Is there any risk in buying this?

Ty

Yes, he could have a "log book loan" on the car and if so it could be snatched back if you buy it.

There was a program on it a few weeks ago, it seems a log book loan does not show on the hpi register

I wouldnt buy a car with only the green slip, To me that sounds like he has ony just got the car & its not in his name yet.

If thats the reason why is he selling it on already?

It seems a very common thing these days, there are many innocent reasons that the V5 could be missing, and a handful of not so innocent reasons.... no one on hear could give you a clear yea, or ney, its your decision... personally I'd wait for the correct paper work to turn up, and maybe give him some sort of deposit, post dated cheque or the like, or just look elsewhere

The green sleep had his details in, not the one that i would have taken had he not lost the V5
I know what you mean... if i were to buy it i would take it into my local garage so they can check it for any problems anyway

I dont know what to do, its quite a nice car. Black 3dr, audi tt alloys, 95k miles and hes asking £1500

It's a loan that uses your cars logbook as security Linky: http://www.logbookloans2go.co.uk/?gclid=COWytsCYi6kCFUIPfAod7gFJqA

I'm not saying it has one of these on it but it's always best to buy a car with full documentation, as today's bargain can turn into tomorrow's nightmare - buyer beware.
