Whiney high pitched noise at high revs
« on: 26 May 2011, 18:28 »
Hi everyone,

For as long as I can remember by Golf GTI MK3 1996 AGG has made this quite loud high pitched whiney noise when the revs get high.

You can hear it everytime you are about to change gear

Its a bit like the noise that cars sometimes make when reversing.

At first I thought it was an air leak... opened up the bonnet though and definately seems to be coming from the thing i've circled in this picture. Sometimes also makes wierd noises when the revs are on their way down too....

Anybody have any ideas?

It's probably the alternator belt. It's common for it to squeak with age, along with the power steering belt. It only costs a few pounds and fitting it is an easy 10-30 minute job depending on your skill.

Don't go dishing out on a new alternator just yet. It's not too common for the bearings to fail, so it'll be the belt which is a few pounds only. No point spending £70+ on a new alternator only for it to be a £5 belt...

My gti 8v whines all the time from that area. Mine is a constant whine that increases with the revs. Very noticable when driving.

If it is whining it could be the belt is too tight, replace the belt as a 1st step.

i need a new alternator as there is a crack all the way down the right hand side bracket for it wich must be pulling the belt tighter.
