Intermittent Temperature Gauge light.....
« on: 23 May 2011, 15:14 »
Hi guys, having an issue with the red LED light flashing on and off on the temperature gauge, even when engine isn't hot and has just been started. Also the LCD display for the onboard computer display(mpg, temp etc) keeps coming on and off. Anyone got any ideas where i should be looking? Mk1 Golf GTi Cab, 1.8Dx engine. Thanks in anticipation of your help

My first pointer would be to start checking your earths.. Under the dash on the glovebox side there is an earth crown with lots of brown wires plugged in, check them all and look for any that are hanging and not connected.

just to add, this earthing point is next to the fuse box, you cant miss it but maybe a little hard to access with the lower dash shelf still attached.

Right, I've had a look today, not sure what i'm really looking for with regards to the earthing point in fuse box, I'm gonna need a torch, will grab one at work tomorrow. Find that if I move the relay about the indicators start working again for a while. Was thinking it may be 2 seperate faults(the indicators and the compute/temp light)as the lights, brake lights etc all working fine. Is this a faulty relay or is it possible that its the contacts or something? Garage replaced the relay around 2 years ago for mot but the car hasn't moved since then.

Could be a dodgy fusebox

Could be a faulty relay but I suspect a poor contact in the fusebox itself.  Check the relay's connection in the fuse box, can you see them all clearly when the relay is removed, are they in good condition?.... When the relay is fitted, is it tight or does it move about easily? I would also suggest dropping the fusebox off it's hangers and check the back of it.  Check it for condition and to see if it's got damp at all.  Previous signs of damp will show itself as a green mouldy/crusty residue on the back connections.  MK1's very often develop a windscreen leak just above the box, I still have one.. I have recently rewired the entire car and have corked the leak for now....

I will take some pictures for you tonight to help with some of the above where I can.

Before I do that you may want to look at my project thread as there are some pics there... links for that and my dub rides are in my sig below.  not sure if anything is of any use to you....

The earthing point for all brown wired earths that are local to the fusebox should be connected to the location shown in the pic below.

If you see any earths not connected plug them in, also check that the ones that already are, are in good condition and make a tight contact.
