MK4 GTI 1.8T 180BHP do they exist?
« on: 30 March 2005, 22:16 »
Hi guys...I've been looking at upgrading my MK3 GTI to a MK4 1.8T ideally 180 BHP, I know the standard is 150 BHP and they did the anniversary 180 BHP in 2002 (too much for the budget), but i have seen some older models advertised with 180 BHP. Does anyone know if they did the 180BHP pre 2002??? :undecided:
Does anyone know the difference in performance between the 150 and 180???

Thats great guys! thanks,
I won't fall for people trying to sell theirs as a 180BHP,
Do you know how easy it is to have the 1.8T GTI 150 BHP tuned up to 180 BHP or even more?

One of the virtues of the 1.8T 20v engine is that it is very easy to tune, with great results chieved for not a lot of money.

There are many companies out there that will gladly relieve you of your hard earnt cash in exchange for liberating more ponies from your motor. Have a look at AMD (http://www.auto-amd.com/) for some ideas of what is achievable, on what budget.

There are a few differences between 1.8Ts.  AWD engine coded cars are rated at 150hp.  They have a K03 turbo and 9.3:1 compression ratio.  The AWW coded cars are also rated at 150hp but they were equipped with a larger K03 turbo commonly called the "K03 Sport".  They are known to drive much better and are a bit faster after just a couple mods.  The AWP cars are the 180hp version.  They have a 9.5:1 compression ratio and the K03 Sport turbo.  Overall they are the best 1.8Ts but not a whole lot different than the AWW cars.  The engine code can be found on a little tab on the head.  if you remove the plastic engine cover look to the pulley side of the motor towards the front.

In the UK the 150bhp DBW 1.8T with vvt and K03s turbo was an AUM, an AUQ (which I have) has all the same bits but came with 6speed box, 312mm brakes and one or two other bits.
The difference between the two powerwise is just ECU software, the AUM runs at 0.6bar, AUQ 0.8bar.
Both will remap to the same figures.

I'm picking up my 180bhp at the weekend. What sort of minor mods can get me more power. Is there much difference between the turbos in the 150 and the 180?

The turbos are the same on 150/180, and if you get ti chiped, the 180 will still only produce the same power as the 150.
For less than £900, mine is up to 220bhp, it was rolling roaded at 212 with just the chip(£499)
