big brakes on mk1???
« on: 30 March 2005, 21:55 »
i know this has been a much talked about topic but i was hoping somebody might know where to find the caliper carriers for either a 256mm or 280mm front brake conversion? the brakes on my old formel e are more than scary! i dont need a whole kit as sold by some outlets for a fortune as i already have 16v calipers ready to go but am struggling to find the required carriers and dont fancy trawling round the scrappys to see if they have any old audis to pull apart!     thanks

I was exactly the same. Was physically scared the first time tried to stop at lights from 70

300 odd quid will give you excellent front braking from a TSR kit (once they have been worn in!)

First of all let me say this.

A well serviced brake system with 239 vented and drums at the back will have no problem stopping at all. Since the MK1 is light its satisfied with this combo. Now, the pedal feel doesn't feel right. It requires more strength and its kind of vaig sometimes.

So, lets think we you need to upgrade to bigger brakes. You have fading? Get better discs and pads. You need more grip? Get softer pads and grooved discs.

Keep in mind this general rule. Whatever front discs and calipers you are using, you need to upgrade to the same Master cylinder is come with. 256=22mm MC
If you install just the 22mm MC hoping to improve feeling and power, you will actually downgrade your system.

My advice to you is this. Leave the standard system alone, do a brake fluid flush, get some SS brakelines and some Green EBC pads and call me in the morning.

im in the middle of making the spacers so you can run 280mm disc on a mk1, its the same as the TSR kit but at the 1/4 of the price

im hoping to pick up the first batch next wk

Which discs are you going to use? Rover ones like the TSR kit or G60 ones?

I had a good look around and managed to get new caliper carriers for 280mm discs and 280mm brembo discs from a company called- designadubs in basingstoke, for a whopping-£111!!!  bargain,  these carriers take original mk1 gti calipers which saves a few quid! their workshop is amock with trick golfs so they seem to know what they are doing with g60, turbos and mad mk1s everywhere!i havent had time to try to fit it all yet as i need gti calipers coz my weedy formel e calipers are different to gti items! anybody got any???  also going to fit 22mm m/cyl at same time so i'll let you know how it all goes, with a bit of luck i should have time to tinker at the weekend
