Another mk5 with a steering noise
« on: 22 May 2011, 00:09 »
Hi,

Have had my golf gti for about 6 weeks now and in that time I have changed timing belt, water pump, brake fluid, new discs and pads all round, service, air con service, however I have started to notice a low level noise coming from the steering when car stationary or moving at slow speed. At first I thought it was a sticky brake, since when you went to move the car for the first time you got a slight clang noise which sounds lik brake release. With the new discs all round that's not the case now and the noise is still there.

When you move the steering wheel from left to right as you did in the old days tO check for play in the steering you can hear this low level noise which sounds like a slight tapping noise or like a grinding noise. Seems to be a problem for some any new information as to what is could be?

Is it suspension, track rod ends, mountings, steering rack, etc

Anyone got an idea?

Cheers
Stu
