So as ive said last night the clutch started to slip on my 8v its done over 200,000 miles now so ive decide to change the engine at the same time but as ive never driven or been in a mk3 gti I dont know what to expect, is the switch to a 2.0 worth doing or should I stay 1.8? If im honest speed and power is what im after but without spending major bucks. Also if I change it do I go 4 the compleate angine or just the bottom end?

help needed

Just use the bottom with your 1.8 head, as long as its in good nick.  Expect more torque and more fun

You are going to have to replace the clutch so you may as well replace the whole engine while your at it.

2.0 bottom end is good but if you can spend a bit more put the ABF 2.0 16v in. 150 bhp + . Easily sourced from rusty MK3's.

Not if you have a CE2 loom.  If you have the hazard switch on the steering column then its fairly straight forward plug and play.

There's a sticky on ABF conversions in this section.

No ive got the hazard on the dash its a 1989 so how hard would it be? I dont mind takin the dash out cuz since I changed the heater matrix the dash squeeks like a canary so it would b a case of 2 birds with 1 stone

Not related but the squeek is probs the actual fan itself, mine is weird like that. get some lube down there and it might sortt eh squeak.

as for the loom, you need too get Rubjonny to sort you out with his homebrew kits, you send him your loom and and he will make it right for a ABF ;)

2.0 8v or the ABF swap are both good choices :afro:

You're like a broken record, you are...
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

2.8 and 1.8T are your other options (you did say speed and power)
