Found a cheap 1.9D with years tax and ticket on it for work commute.

Going to view over weekend hopefully, what shall I look out for?

Any common problems etc?

rust mines a nightmare and if you can get a 1.9 tdi as the d is slow!  check the sills and the jacking points ...

Thanks for replies so far, speed is not an issue with this one, just need a cheap car to get to work and back in really. Got the GTI for weekends.

So these rust more than the GTI's?

As far as im aware these engines are pretty damn bulletproof and go forever if looked after.

Look for a turbo, if there is a shortage...... Walk away!

Rust is a killer on all mk3s but being a non GTI means you can find it easier.

+1

And no, they aren't fast. But they're more than capable for the commute. I took mine to Germany through the Ardenne, and it proved to be ok. I would strongly recommend this engine...although a turbo is nice for a bit of acceleration.
