Hello all,

Going through the process of booking my 5 year old GTi (just under 20,000 Miles) for a service.

It needs a major service, brake fluid and cambelt / water pump etc

Now I was looking at the "fixed priced plan" £349 for 2 services (one now, one in a years time), but ive been told I cant have the longlife oil.

Question: Is there a difference in oils used on a T&D service compared with the Longlife service? I've been using 5W30, is it a different grade ie 5w40 on T&D, or is it the same just with a "longlife" additive?

Me and the poor VW woman just confused the hell out of each other.  :nerd:

Managed to get the following quote:

Service plan - Major service this year / minor service next year
Free MOT's 2 years
Brake Fluid change
Cambelt, tensioner etc and water pump
Coil Pack recall (FOC)

£775

I think there is a difference in the oil but I'm not sure what it is but I'm sure someone will be along shortly who knows!

The price you've been quoted for the work is too much as I'm pretty sure the brake fluid change is part of the service plan.  I took the plan out last year and the brake fluid was changed as part of the deal. I'm assuming you've been quoted £399 for cam belt & water pump, but if you ring a few dealers you will find it cheaper then get your dealer to price match. I went through all this last year!

According to TT, regardless of if your are on T&D or longlife service, your vw dealer should use long life spec oil that's fully synthetic VW 504.0 approved.

Long life oil is 5w 30 and time and distance oil is 5w 40.  However lots of people have said that only 5w 30 oil is recommended for use now whatever service plan your on.

Im on Time and distance and I use 5w 30.

mmmm I want 5w30 oil put in, but apparently thats not going to happen on the T&D fixed plan, (she is double checking with the garage and getting back to me this morning).

FAO mb: Just out of interest how much did you pay if you dont mind saying.

Originally I was quoted £808 which was straight from the website pricing. Local indy £708 using VW parts.

The original quote for just a cambelt change (I didn't have water pump done) started at £600 but I found a dealer that was sort of near who was doing it for £299. I just rang my dealer and they priced matched it.  All I had to do was tell them which dealer it was.

The 2 year service plan was £299 when I took it out last May. In the paperwork I have it shows that a brake fluid change is included in the plan. This is why I thought your quote was too high as it should be included.

Just had a quick look and most dealers now seem to be offering the cambelt change for £319 as per the VW fixed price servicing which wasn't there when I was sorting mine out last year.

cheers mb, appriciate the quick reply, currently have phone against my ear onto VWCS.

Apparently the brake fluid is a optional cost??

my quote was £775 all in, fixed plan (major and minor service), cam belt / water pump, 2 years MOT's.

Basically £40 cheaper than website.

Though VW website states: Servicing is based on manufacturer's recommended service schedule for a particular Volkswagen model. My manual recomends I should get this done ever 2 years, so surely it should be free.

Just finished my call to VWCS, apparently the on my 2006 gti if I switch to T&D there will be a change in oil grade not being 5W30, specs are 501.01 / 502.00

But on 2008 models onwards its the same oil grade 5w30.

I raised the question that the 2006 and 2008 models are the same and no difference, he went silent and said thats what the system says!!!!

They must of changed the service plan from last year then.  Put the price of it up by £50 and remove the brake fluid change!

No idea what oil they put in mine as you don't get any paperwork after the service.

No paperwork? How do you know what has been done, even though regardless of paperwork you trust them anyway.

So you rely on there system that you paid this time for next years service and MOT
