Topic: Wanted mk 2 16v oak green

If you are thinking of selling this guy is after a mk2 with a knacker-ed engine. He goes on to say that he isn't bothered about it

being oak green. My opinion would be to keep it if you look on the parts for sale section there are plenty of engines going. As far as

repair goes if you did go down that line i wouldn't dream of a short fix, like the guys said, you need to get the head off first , not a

massive job, and check all valves etc etc, i would be amazed if there not shot to pieces, might have been lucky if you were doing 20

but not 70,. Once the head is off you'll have a much better idea of potential costs but don't give up just yet

Being an 8v, the damage will not be as bad.
Take the head, it might not be as bad as you think.

If it's completely standard, and didn't let go at silly revs (c. 6800+, higher than redline) the 1.8 8v engine is non interference. I wouldn't even bother taking the head off, should be fine with just a new belt & tensioner.

If it's not standard ,ie got a higher lift cam, or the head or block have been decked to increase compression, or different pistons, then it's a problem.

1.1s, 1.3s and 16v are the only Mk2 Golf engines with interference.

You're not going to know if the engine is standard, or whether the head has been skimmed.
Take the head off as a matter of course, anything else would be just bad practice.

i agree. it would be madness not to check the top end out, especially as you were doing 70

If the 8v engine really is non interference then thats great news!!!!

Alot of the Fiat engines are non interference, my mate had the cam belt snap on his Chinq at high speed,  he just popped a new belt on, timed it up and it ran like a good'un.
