GTI tail pipe trims
« on: 18 May 2011, 06:19 »
I've never really been a fan of the wheelbarrow handle exhausts on the GTI.
Some members on here have upgraded their exhausts which at least gives the car a nicer pair of slash cut pipes to tidy up the rear end somewhat.
So, without having to resort to shelling out £400+ on an exhaust that won't give me any extra performance over the standard one, can anyone recommend some high quality tail pipe trims that fit the GTI rear pipes?

Shell out £400 mate

I'm looking at getting either a Milltek Cat-back system or the VWR cat-back.

Cheapest option would be to find a custom exhaust place and get them to make up some tips and weld them onto your existing exhaust

Not with you on this one. I like the look and GTI tail pipes. One of my favourite features of the car. When there cleaned and polished I think look good. That's not to say I wouldn't mind investing in a better exhaust system.

I agree, I saw SteveP's Milltek pipes a while back and they filled the cut outs and looked amazing.

I'm also looking at VWR's pipes, they are much bigger than the standards and have the "R" on the pipes. I'm going to check them out at GTI international. They are also made by Milltek so you know the quality you're getting.

Sounds like that's a 'no' then!

Cat back exhaust - to me that's pointless. More noise, no performance gain, original exhaust only 2 years old and still in good condition.

TBE exhaust - I like that idea but too expensive for me, I only use the car occasionally so will never get any value from it. Not sure whether sports cat will pass MOT, not sure whether I'll still have the car at MOT time!

Welding custom tails on - wash your keyboard out young man! Clip on ones or nothing for me! The car is barely 2 years old and I don't want a welding torch near the car until it's at least 12 years old (and hopefully had several other owners by then!!!)

Sport cats will pass the MOT, decats won't

And you wanted a cost effective idea and that's my idea

As far as I know there is a small improvement in performance with a Cat-back system, although I will bow to Doc's view on this.

If you want a nicer tail pipe design, check out Akropovic slips on, you have a choice of Cardon fibre or titanium!!! They are a bargain @ over £500!

The Akrapovic slip-on's sound like a more practical idea.
The same performance gain as a cat back (none) and roughly the same price and yet they won't upset a dealer when the car goes in for a service as the exhaust is still a VW one  Bargain when you think about it!!!

I was under the impression some of the 100 cel sports cats don't meet exhaust regs. Too much mis-information on forums I guess, so I'm happy to stand corrected!

Your cost effective idea was a nice one. I just ain't letting a welding torch near my car yet!!
My old Ibiza, yep, that'll need it soon. My Golf, no!
