Car stereo and ignition barrel help please
« on: 29 March 2005, 17:44 »
Hi all
can anyone advise me any further on this

basically my car stereo has stopped working, and i took it down to the local stereo fitting place, after doing all the checks i could,
and they done a quick test, and came back with its due to the ignition barrel

any idea what this would be? as i just phoned up to get a price for this from a local vw shop and they asked if it is the barrel or the electrical component i am after
wasn't sure, so i explained the problem and he said ahh you most properly need the electrical bit which fits on the end then
but when i was at the stereo place, the way the guy there explained it,
it seems more like he was saying a switch that flicks inside the barrel when you put the key, had most probably broken

so now I'm totally confused as to what part i need?
any help advice, would be greatly appreciated
many thanx
all the best
Ben

Could be the contacts are worn inside the switch i had this sort of problem with the old mk3 1.4 K reg i just replaced the ignition switch electrical components not the barrell and it did the trick didn't cost me too much either for the components had the brake pipes done at  the same time and it all came to £108 inc lab.

Hope this helps.

I'm on the verge of having both of mine changed.  Over the weekend i was cleaning the interior when i noticed a small plume of smoke rising from between the steering wheel and the cowl behind it, turned the ignition off and grabed the key out.  Nothing else happened and the car works ok but i think it's on borrowed time now.

Also when i pull my key ou sometimes the barrel stays stuck in and the stereo stays on.  I have to hook it out witht he end of the key.  Very Annoying!

Ignition switch (the electric bit) is a common fault on all VW`s.The barrels are usally OK with a bit of WD40 sprayed in them.

turns out the Ignition switch (the electric bit) isn't a different thing to just the Ignition switch?
and i only recenetly replace the Ignition switch. so sod it!
stereo rewired so that it no longer turns off with the key, but manualy.,
oh well, at least it works again
