Golf GTI 2.0 to 1.8 Conversion
« on: 16 May 2011, 10:31 »
Hello How much work would be required in doing an engine change from my 2.0 8v aqy to a 1.8 non turbo engine/tdi/1.8t?

I presume it would require the following:
Engine
ECU   ?
Manafold?
turbo is i go for a 1.8t or tdi
fuel tank if i go for a tdi?

What other stuff would be needed?

The reason I want to do a engine change is my aqy is misfiring and burning oil and I've heard the aqy's and 2.0 8v are very unreliable??

Thanks in advanced.

Sell the 2.0 and buy a 1.8 it's far less of a head ach and cheapest way...

Your looking at major work, much easier with a donor car as you will need to change the wiring as well.

With the values of mk4's is it ever worth it plus insurance can be a hassle.

Sounds like quite a bit of work then really,
Tho if I have to buy a new aqy engine I wouldn't want to have the same problems again.

Just sort of wondering if I can put the 1.8t lump in for less than what I would lose selling this one.

I don't really know how much I will get for a 2.0 litre golf gti on a x plate with engine management light on burning loads of oil :(

I bought my 2.0 gti 2 and a bit years ago for 4.5k!  58 k miles, immaculate,  put 4k miles on it, and a sh!t load of oil in it, and just got 2250 for it!

Theres one on here that has shifted at all even with 1k price drop, you might be  looking around 1200 for it?

I would take £1200 for it I might list it on eBay at some point then.
Has loads of tax and mot as well.
Bit of a shame never knew the 2.0 were so bad untill speaking to someone at my garage and browsing the web.
I take it the rest of the engine range on the mk4's are ok then? I really like driving my mk4 as I had a 1.8t before which I regret selling.

1.8t is the best all round choice.
