MK3 GTI 8v Cutting Out
« on: 09 September 2003, 12:01 »
Has anyone any experince of intermittent problems with engine stalling on 2.0 GTI 8v ?

Main dealer has taken to much money and not helped at all, speed sensor changed (made no difference), fully serviced but still a few times a week either when coming to a stop or low rev's in 2nd, rev counter dives and engine stalls..friend has suggested idle stabilisatino valve.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated ???

Try the fuel pump and ecu relays, they have been suggested many times on this site as being a problem.

Agreed . Seems to be a common problem on these engines .

We really should have a database of faults and fixes

Does your gti actually cutout completely or is it more like kangaroo petrol.  Because thats a problem I am having with mine at the moment.  Wondering if it may be the same fault.  I have been replacing the vacuum hoses between intake and master cylinder. With a bit of success.  PLease let me know, thanks

'kangarooing' is usually a problem with the fuel pump/ relay.

It completely cuts out, inconsistently. VW are being awkward as every time I take it out with them for a test its ok...

I had a mark2 though which kangarood occasionally had it three years and never find out what was causing it, pretty much everything was checked though other than the carb..

Your problem is a dirty clogged up throttle body.

Tis a very common problem on these cars. I have had a couple of Mk3 8v's and both were doing this when i picked them up. I recommend a full throttle body clean every 50k miles. I'm guessing this hasn't been done.

When you take this prob to a main dealer they seem to want to replace sensors and checking fueling componants before simply cleaning out the throttle body which gets full of crap over the 50-60k, i'm guessin your car has done.

Good news is its cheap to do. Follow the instructions in the Haynes manual on how to take it appart. Takes about an hour and costs the price of some good carb cleaner or a can of WD40.

If you don't wanna do it yourself the garage should do it for around ?40.

The difference you will notice afterwards is tremendous! Better than any mod. Your car will feel like brand new!

Let me know how you get on.

If the car just cuts out dead, it could be a problem with your ignition system.

I too had this problem with my mk3 gti, I changed the ECU relay(no 30)  part no vw165906381 at a cost of 10 quid and I have had no problem since.
This was advice given thru the forum another great success!!
