What you have to remember is its the price of petrol going up making the MPG decline £1.38 a L at my nearest garage and when your low you dont have much choice as that red line alway seems to sneak up on me.

It's not it's making the £ per mile go up.

You not putting more fuel in, it's just more expensive and the OP said per tank full not per £50 quid note

OP you need to get your exhaust fixed then get a fault code machine on your motor to check for faults sensors etc once you've had the exhaust repaired.

Once any faults have been sorted try short shifting and observe speed limits when driving - or break 'em and get it in 5th

Ummm maybe air/fuel ratio the cause? Cracked hose? Plus the maf sensor may be touchy. Other leaks? Maybe someone is siphoning fuel?

Try this out. Fill up car. Go for drive on motorway and go at 50-60mph constantly for say 60miles.

Fill up car again. How much fuel did you use? I'd say up to 7-8 litres is acceptable. Over 9 then you are running rich. Over ten then you have the swiss cheese effect.

Your fuel economy is really bad. Unless you drive at 100mph everywhere and change gears only when it redlines.

220?!  You should be getting at least 300. Sounds like you should also have your CO2 level checked on a VAG155x.
