What you have to remember is its the price of petrol going up making the MPG decline £1.38 a L at my nearest garage and when your low you dont have much choice as that red line alway seems to sneak up on me.
It's not it's making the £ per mile go up.
You not putting more fuel in, it's just more expensive and the OP said per tank full not per £50 quid note

OP you need to get your exhaust fixed then get a fault code machine on your motor to check for faults sensors etc once you've had the exhaust repaired.
Once any faults have been sorted try short shifting and observe speed limits when driving - or break 'em and get it in 5th
