Whirring noise but after switch off???
« on: 15 May 2011, 18:16 »
When I stop the engine I get a whirring noise for a couple of seconds. The fan is switched off and the noise occurs whether the clutch is in or out. From inside the car it sounds like it is coming from behind the dash up towards the left, it sounds quite metallicy just as if something is continuing to rotate after the engine has stopped, If it wasn't for the fact that the fan is switched off  and if you switch the fan on and off it does not make this noise, I would swear it was the fan?? I have tried to listen inside the engine bay but cannot locate it.

I am at a loss to think what could still rotate freely after the engine has stopped. No other symptons with engine running or whilst driving. Hmmmm!

91 8v PB btw.

So its not the interior fan, or the radiator fan under the bonnet, that's what you checked?  Could it be a fuel pump, they are to the rear though?

After you turn the engine off, is the key still on position 1, or off completely?

Defo not the rad fan - I would have seen it when the wife switched the engine off with my head under the bonnet.

It is coming from the dash area I am sure so not likley to be the fuel pump. I know sound travels strangely in cars though.

It sounds like something continuing to rotate but could it be some sort of 'burping' in the coolant system?

Key is switched right off but not removed.

Yeah - I will try that to make doubly sure. However, the fan does not make this noise when you just switch it off with the dash switch - engine running or not.

Ok well sussed it! It was a metallic noise but not whirring, it was rattling. The aerial mast was not fully up and so one of the sections was rattling when the engine was switched off. The car must shudder and vibrate the aerial mast. That is what was happening and "that is all I have to say about that".

Derrr. :embarassed:

Yo! Clash. That is exactly what I thought about.

That is such a good advert. Epitomises the Mk 2 Golf in my view.

And yes, glad it was not more serious.
