Suspension refurb
« on: 14 May 2011, 07:48 »
Just looking for a couple of opinions, I have a fairly original 91 8v thats in need of a little updating. I replaced all the brakes and lines last year and this year its suspension and bushes.
I can see there are alot of poly bushes on the market but are they much better than oem? Do they affect the comfort of the ride over a long Journy or make the car bang about over the bumps? Also I want to replace the shocks with new but dont want to lower the car any more than standard.
Basicly I want to firm the car up a little with fresh components but I want to retain some comfort.
any Idears or recomendations would be much apprectiated.

Koni shocks, then replace the bushes as required, standard would still be the better choice.

Poly bushes make the handling better IMO and definately improve the steering but they do add a certain extra amount of crashiness. As for dampers, if you want something approaching standard ride quality but with better handling then try Bilstein B6 or B8 dampers. Havent tried them on my own golf (I have Koni adjustables on there at the moment and am not keen on them, too bouncy at the front) but I had the B8's on a BMW and they were absolutely awesome. Bloody expensive mind but you do get what you pay for! Alternatively, get them as part of a B12 suspension kit and feel the full benefits of a quality damper and spring combo http://www.balancemotorsport.co.uk/products.asp?recnumber=105862
