Another 130 boost leak issue
« on: 12 May 2011, 00:59 »
Seriously it does seem a problem on these doesnt it

Symptoms are:
Slight whoosh sound and shocking mpg, havnt noticed masses of black smoke and it still pulls very well.

Two things ive noticed are  breather piper at top of engine is split so i taped it up and then noticed the joint on the rubber hose to the left of it shown in this pic is loose, opens up about 2mm and has oil build up under it.

After taping up the breather and wiggling that pipe my mpg went up straight away but then after a bit of driving it dropped off again.
Can these two pipes cause boost leak issues?
Cant see any others failing and IC looks fine.
Any help will be great.

The rubber pipe is from your EGR to intercooler

If it moves and oil is present then that's a sure sign of a leak

I thought all of the joints would have a small build up of oil?
In the pic i put up that one has the same gap as mine, its only tiny.
I think im going to have to get the car put up in the air to have a look.
Im struggling to get 50mpg on motorway where as it used to do at least 62mpg :(

Ideally no mate

If its not leaking from there it could be your turbo outlet pipe.  I had that one split on me.  That's £100 by the way

Think i may do the fairy liquid and water thing to see if it bubbles from there.
Whats the best way to replace/repair the pipes? and if i get a new one can i wrap it with heat wrap or something to make it less likely to split again.
Thought someone would have invented a direct replacement metal pipe for £100!

What normally happens is the lugs wear away over time so the only option is to replace the pipe completely.  VW don't sell the connectors separately .....

SFS do a replacement metal hard pipe from the EGR to Intercooler which is the one in your picture but its not cheap.  It also works best with the EGR delete as the pipe itself is bigger and uses a jubilee clip to hold in place.  Look at Adam's build thread as he had one fitted to his 130

The turbo outlet is under the car.  You won't get a metal replacement as it has to move when the engine moves.  A metal pipe would snap in about 30 seconds lol

Thats nice of them isnt it

So really its a new  £100 red pipe then, if it is that of course.
Dont see it being anything else really.
Do you reckon wrapping the new red pipe would make it stronger and less prone to splitting?

Yep - cost me £120 fitted about 18 months ago the day before a RR day

Won't do a jot IMO mate.  In all honesty the pipe had done 110K miles so not too bad; plus it was remapped

Mines done 57k and not remapped

Nothing else would cause it would it?
Just fitted a pipercross panel filter, i know people say it doesnt make any difference but with an enlarged air intake it made a difference on mine.
