Wet sanding? anyone with experince
« on: 10 May 2011, 22:49 »
Right, my mk4 is 10 years old, and has plenty of marks on the paint with it being black.

I work as a valeter/detailer for a garage, ive worked with rotary polishers etc, but ive never wet sanded a car. I read a post recently somewhere about someone wet sanding and then re-polishing there bonnet to bring up the shine a bit more (didnt go into any detail). I dont want to go through the paint so what grade paper would people recommend? Also once sanded should it be compounded then rotared, then polished/glazed?

Anyone thats done it, any information/directions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Been doing this yesterday, using
2000grade, going to purchase some 2500.
It takes a few passes to rid the marks but does work, remember that you have to take out the scratches that you
Put in and don't go mad, steady away.

If you are in the trade, you won't have any dramas cos it's all about reading how much you're removing and being realistic about what you can achieve.

I've had a few dabbles with wet sanding both on finished paint and between coats when refinishing and never caused any damage but I've kerbed my enthusiasm to ensure I didn't

What is it you are trying to remove?  I'm asuming as you've asked the question, it's not something that can be removed with a machine and polish?

In my [limited] experience if you are trying to correct much more than damage to the clear coat, scuffs/light scratches then you are asking too much.  That's not to say for deeper scratches you couldn't paint in some colour then sand that flat with the same method but by wet sanding alone there is a limit.

By alternating the direction and coming back up through the grades to at least 3000 grit (I have been known to use micro mesh up to 12000 grit to make subsequent polishing easy) you will minimise anything you've imparted and a decent run over with a machine will remove all of these and leave you a happy bunny.

True, 2000 grade does not completley buff out using a steady polishing action, I have bought 2500 grade in the hope Ican remove this.

Do you not think so?

With a machine or by hand?

If it's by hand, the finer you can go the better.  I've not tried to hand polish anything more than 3000 grit marks which came out fairly easily.  I don't think you'll completely remove 2500 grit marks by hand without a lot of work, depending on the type/colour of paint but it's not going to look horrendous.

I just think of polishing as an extension of the sanding process.  If you leave deep marks, there's no polish in the world that will get rid/fill them, but if you leave it smoother still, the polish can cope easily.
