To be honest, I'd rather not spend ?5k on it - it's only going to be a runaround for my wife 95% of the time, and there's things I want to do to our house that I'd rather spend the money on!

What could I get for around ?3000?

Its a nice runaround for the missus, tidy enough shopmobile, very cheap to run, fit the kids in the back.
But seriously though they are crap!

mk3 would certainly be a easier and more comfortable car to drive for your wife and i think you would get a nice k reg for well under  2 grand I did! mileage isnt that important if it has been looked after

If you just want a runaround get a 1.4. They are not fast but good solid reliable motor. You should be able to get a very tidy early model for 2k or under  ;D

I want a runaround for my wife, yes, but at the same time I want something that's got a reasonable turn of speed on it - mainly because I think for my next company car I'll be having a pick-up truck which won't be fast at all.  I want something to take for a blast every so often!

I've just bought a K reg diesel Citroen ZX for her to use until I find a Golf though!!

Anyone in Telford want to come to the Trench Lock auction and look over cars for me?  ;D

I've never bought a car from Volkswizard, but I have met the person the person who runs Volkswizard. He has helped me out with a few problems on my Mk2 and mk3 golfs. I have seen a number of the cars he has had for sale and they all looked pretty genuine to me.  (He has a unit on the same site where I get my cars serviced.) He is quite knowledgeable about golfs.
