Brake Upgrade for Road/Track
« on: 05 May 2011, 20:06 »
Hi everyone. i need to upgrade the brakes on my mk2, just got back from The Ring and i wanna get sorted to go back for a hot lap! Its got a 2litre 8v engine but was a driver so its got drums on the back.. probably not worth changing these?? Iv been looking at EBC turbo discs and YellowStuff pads but i hear they arent much use till theyv warmed up..

Wondering if anyone can suggest whatd be the best solution for good brakes on the road and light track use. Whether its better to get bigger sized discs and which ones? Iv tried scanning for an old thread but no joy.

Ta

You need a set of 280mm front brakes and a 22mm master cylinder.

I wouldn't bother about uprated pads and discs - just run OEM quality replacements and you really should be fine.

Hubs are available off stuff like SEATs and TDI B3 Passats, with carriers etc, normally for reasonable prices.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Am i right in saying you need a GTi beam to fit rear discs?

I may still have a spare one you can have for the postage price, if you want to fit rear discs. It would be a more expensive job, as you need the stub axles, calipers, new bushings etc, for less gain. Front brakes should be upgraded first definately.

I would forget about messing about with the rear if its track only, just get them so the handbrake works and that will do. As stated swap the fronts to 280mm brakes from a g60.

As said, get some 280s up front with good quality discs and pads. You don't need a gti rear beam to convert to discs as the stub axles will bolt onto any beam, but depending on what your car started as you may need to change the beam mount on the n/s to accomodate the brake bias valve. Advantage of gti rear beam is factory anti roll bar.

defantly swap the ear beam for a GTi one if it's a track car,    rear disks are very worthwhile upgrade on a track car, drums will fade on the rear but more inportantly drums can lock on very easaly  if you park up when there hot and use the handbrake   there is no uick way to get them off ether :(

at least with disks the worst you can do is warp them

280's up frount  std plain disk  FTW and pads,   if you ever get any fade consider ebc yellows   but if a 2.0 8v fades 280's your brakeing way to much
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
