Dirty Ring
« on: 04 May 2011, 14:20 »
Hi all,

I have been following the forum for some time and finally took hold of my GTi as the weekend. Alas, mortgage and kids forced me down the used route but I am more than happy. In my car gleaning regime I like to buff and polishe everything to keep it looking a1 but I am struggling to bring the chrome exhaust pipes back to their former shiny condition. Both have  what seems like a carbon deposit film encrusted on them so they essentially appear black. No amount of scrubbing or reasonable application of chrome cleaner\brasso is shifting it. I would appreciate if any of you folks have found the same issue or can recommend some sort of off the shelf cutting agent to address.

Cheers

Lee

Autosol seems a popular choice.
Personally mine are just left half black most of the time, some nice matt black trims would be a good idea so I'd never have to worry about them.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you need some fine grade wire wool and a decent metal polish (can't remember the one I use). You can purchase these items in Halfords. It takes a lot of elbow grease but the results will be well worth it.

Brasso works well too.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Brasso works well too.

Looks like he's tried different cleaning products. I think (very fine) wire wool in conjunction with Autosol, Brasso, Megs NXT will really help.
