Headlights

standard headlights are allways steamed up, also not very bright,
are there any upgrades or do I just fit 150 watt bulbs. :-[

I know if I even fitted 100 watt bulbs on any of my vehicles I risk burning out parts of the wiring loom or would need to fit relays etc.........

Only joking about the 150 watt bulbs, I once had a mini cooper with
7" round Wipac quadoptics would these fit.

if they are steaming up then moisture is getting inside. Are the lenses cracked by any chance? if not then most likely either the seal between the lens and the housing is dried out and allowing water in or the housing may have a defect allowing water to get inside. if it is the lense to housing bit then I have had good luck putting clear RTV (silicone) around the seam smoothing it out and letting it dry. if it is a housing defect then you may also be able to use RTV or an epoxy to seal up the defect. It has worked the trick for me in the past.

and a purpose built loom - they're bright as f**k.

Wouldn't recomend them unless your vehicles wiring is exemplorary - as I've had to add two more earth straps!!!

I just fitted those crystal headlights today and drove home in the dark. totally awesome. you couldn't tell you'd just lost 2 lights on the front. I'm pretty sure they're actually brighter than the old 4 lights.

hazlington, if you're interested u can have my old headlights that don't mist up for ?20. I had one replaced cos it got a little pool of water in the bottom everytime I washed the car.

if there steaming up they are letting damp in !check your overall condition and make sure your rubber boot is in place at the rear of your bulbs, but to make your headlights work better you need to upgrade your headlight loom, the voltage drop to your lamps is quite a lot approx 2 volt at times! this is a simple mod and once done you will never look back, there is a few companys that sell this or you can easaly do it yourself, takes approx ten mins to fit if you by a kit,

I have an uprated headlight loom on my MK2 16V and run 150/100w in the normal lights and 150w in the driving lights, never had any problems with MOT's and is funny as you like when people come towards you with main beam on to put mine on, Its like having football stadium lights on the front of the car.

As for water in the light theres only one answer for that, water is getting in, theres a rubber boot on the back which needs to be fitted properly, Take the light out and blow it dry with an airline to get rid of the mist.

The upgrade is fairly easy to do, you just use the standard wiring as the relay switching feed and take the power for the lights direct from the battery. So you don't get voltage drop.
