Right, had a couple round to look at the Polo this afternoon, they seemed interested

Other than rust anything particular to mk3 GTIs worth looking out for?

One more thing I thought of in terms of a comparison between 8v and 16v models is the engine braking effect - I usually slow down as much as possible just using the gears (when it's safe to do so obviously, I'm not driving round hoping to get rear ended in some insurance scam  ) but found that there is barely any effect in my Polo until you're doing very low speeds. Anyone else have a similarly uncomfortable (for any passengers who regret accepting a lift  ) driving style? I'm guessing that the 2.0 engine will have more weight and inertia and maybe there is little effect in the Polo because it is only a 1.4.... but can anyone comment on any difference between the 8v and 16v?

My current 16v drops it's revs slower than my last couple of 8v's did. It took a little bit of getting used to at first but im used to it now...well until i eventually get round to sticking a lightened and balanced flywheel in it.

When I drop into 3rd from 4th or 2nd from 3rd absolutely bugger all happens, where as the Ibiza used to slow down really well with any gear change and I was always too scared of doing some expensive damage in the S2  ....until wrote it off!

I suppose I'll have to get used to a lot things anyway - power, torque, biting point, clutch weight etc etc

If you have a choice then get a 16v however i will say its not worth buying a lemon 16v if a decent 8v is availiable(probly for less too), at the end of the day neither are quick cars so dont expect them to be.

It pays to shop around, a grand for that is not cheap £750 is nearer the mark.
