Simple DIY challenge, half done!
« on: 25 March 2005, 14:22 »
I have a mk2 1990 16v with standard KR engine, big bumpers, 160k.

Electrics?  -Oh don't go there.  Just out of nowhere my driver's side elec window refuses to go down,l or move at all.

There is, however, electric current going through the switch, and the dim light on the switch lights up too.

So I'm thinking that in the door itself there is a loose connection to the motor or dodgy earthing.  All fuses are ok!

With the help of mr.Haynes I took the inside door trim apart and can't find anything wrong.  The prev owner took the door apart b4, I can tell bacause the plastic waterproof sheet thingy was removed then replaced with DUCKTAPE! But I don't see how this can affect the elec window.

I don't know if it's related, but my left-front indicator stopped working, even after a bulb-change!  Then it went back to normal, then the same thing happened to the right one.  Now I dont have any working indicators on the bumper, and all the others keep flashing fast.

Rear wiper stopped working too.  Thing is, my bro has an 8v Digifant, similar with big bumpers, 100k, and his front bumper indicators are starting to play up in the same way.

I'd love to know if anyone else has seen this behaviour, I think it's a central fault once fixed, everything will return to normal.  I hope!

Thanks for your time reading this.

Harry

windows and indicators are not a linked problem

test n see if there is current getting to the electric window motor connector itself. if there is then hit the window motor a few taps with hammer while operating the switch. sometimes they stick if they've not been used for a bit

as for you indicators. check the wiring running down thru the hole just in front of the battery. on mine i found the wiring got chaffed causing it to short

if any of the indicator bulbs are not working then the others will flash double fast. its like a kinda warning to let you know a bulb i out

How can I see if there is current getting to the window motor?  Its hidden behind metal and I cant really even see it properly.  On the bottom-left of the inner door (closest to door hinges) there is a plastic wiring box thingy which looks quite dirty.  I separated them (to disconnect the motor) and cleaned the rusty contacts with wd40.  Still no joy!!

thanks

get one of those we current tester that have a lamp on them and a prod. and you poke this into the motor connector while working the switch. if it lights its getting current if it dont then work backwards tll you get current

I've managed to sort out a few minor problems this weekend which were annoying the fook out of me!!!

The indicator problem turned out to be really simple, i took the bulb out and there is a metal "prong" which the bulb pushes against which is sprung, well that was sat too low so with the help of a screw driver as leverage i managed to pull it out!

then there was the cutting out problem, i followed the instructions posted previously about the 16V's cutting out and playing with the idle screw etc.... worked a treat no more cutting out!!!!!!!

finally both alternator and power steering belts slipped occasionally!! how annoying!!!!! took a couple of hours in my mates garage last night loosening bolts which looked like they hadn't been touched for 16 years!!

So now all round happy chappy!!!!
