Second and fourth gear unselectable
« on: 01 May 2011, 15:13 »
Hi all, on my way home from a friends this afternoon, I went to put it in second gear and it wouldn't go, same with fourth.

First, third, and fifth are all fine, what's the issue here? Gear linkages? Can I do this myself?

99% the linkage has broken. Common problem with 02A cable change boxes.

Not sure if this is the right part if it is the linkage

Buy that kit above mate, once you've fitted that and given the gearbox oil a change it'll feel like brand new (well, my 8v did). Worth every penny and not too difficult to fit either.

If this is an 8v then it's an 020 box (I'm sure you said it was an 8v shady?).

Rubjonny has a guide to these boxes (for the mk2 though) somewhere on here and the set up/fix is similar

Thanks for the input and help guys. I'll get on to buying those two items this evening. The fact they are off eBay won't make much difference will it? Would it not be worth me buying from say GSF or similar?

Is it okay to continue driving it with only three gears selectable to?

Interested to see how this goes - please keep us posted.  Something I've shyed away from a bit as I can't find a good how-to for the 020.

I also have the ball socket to change on mine as it's a bit sloppy all round.

All gears have gone now, apart from fifth. Good job I wasn't far from home because a burning clutch is not something I like the smell of. I hope it's nothing serious.
