New MK5 owner - a couple of questions...
« on: 27 April 2011, 17:43 »
Hello everyone,

I am the happy owner of a new (to me) 55 reg GTI 3dr in Blue Graphite, replacing my trusty Ibiza TDI.
I've had the car for less than a week, and it's certainly living up to expectations so far - especially on twisty B-roads.

This GTI is in great condition for it's age and came from a stealer as a VW approved used car (I had intended to buy privately, but then the right car came along...)  There are a couple of niggles, both of which I've already read up on in some detail using the search.  However, I'd appreciate any recommendations on how I could sort them:

 - the drivers door is a bit misaligned.  Said stealer adjusted (I guess that should read "jacked") it before I collected it but now seems to be back to it's original state.  Is the next step to replace the hinges?

 - the steering is sometimes noisy when parking - based on previous posts I'm certain it's the steering rack.  If I'm right, does anyone know if this would be included in the VW named component warranty (which includes "steering"), or could they claim it's a wear issue?

Thanks in advance, well done on a great forum, which helped in my car choice greatly (the Alfa forum scared me, or at least the technical page did!!)

Before going through the pain of replacing the hinges, try new door pins. They tend to wear and the door drops a fraction as a result.

The steering rack issue is a well known fault with the earlier MKV's and would normally be replaced under warranty. I don't know if the used warranty has the same amount of cover, but it is worth trying

Thanks very much for the advice Hurdy, I will try my luck and see how far I get.

I received my warrantee information in the post.  I have a cover letter with a warrantee number, with expiry date 1yr from purchase, and a T&C booklet for the euphemistically named "All Component" cover.

Zoomered - you should definitely go from the cover note.  Mine has the warranty start and end dates printed clearly in fulll sized text.

Here's a pic of the car (sadly already dirtier...)
