Suspension questions
« on: 23 March 2005, 10:06 »
Hi Folks,

Last night Lewy very kindly helped me sort out my top shock mounts. However all was not well. The replacement ones I bought from GSF don't appear to be the same as the original ones and so he very kindly gave me some struts off a standard MKII (1.3 I think) that he was breaking and their top mounts. Also my rear shocks need replacing as does one of the fronts.

I need to replace all 4 shocks and while I'm at it I might as well drop it with some new springs. The Golf is supposed to be my daily driver and so I don't want fancy/expensive stuff. What is the cheapest combination of shocks and springs that I can get for it? I'm looking to drop it 40mm as 60mm is too much for a car that is used for carrying mini engines etc. SO would a standard set of replacement GTi shocks from GSF and some drop 40mm springs do the job and be the cheapest?

Sorry for the long post,

Nick

When I say cheap, I mean CHEAP! I want to spend as little as possible as the Golf is supposed to be a daily driver on which I spend nowt unless really vital.

The ECP kit sounds tempting. Had a look on their site and it works out at £209 inc VAT and delivery.

GSF do a bewildering range of shocks so I'm not sure which ones would be appropriate and they do Drop 40mm springs for £50. GASF is useful because I can pick bits up as there is one local to me.

For instance GSF offer a BOGE suspension kit for £159+VAT which includes struts. Does this include loered springs as if it does that's quite a bargain?

Or I could get a full set of thier Gas Damper (Whatever brand they are) and some drop 40mm springs for £156 + VAT.

Try these guys http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/

They do a Bilstien Streetline kit for £178.50 inc VAT - not sure how much that can lower though

Other than what has been suggested why not keep an eye on eBay?? You might be able to get a bargin !

i'd go for the boge ones as they are a similar set up to the bilstein streetline(?) kit form ecp. and that should include springs as well. basicly with a set you get shorter dampers to go with the lowered springs so you don't bottom out. not something you have to worry too much about with just a 40mm drop but if your gonna be carting around engines, with standard height dampers and lowered springs your more likely to use up the damper travel. at the end of the day you get what you pay for and if you want to go cheap as possible it may just be easier to get gsf's cheapest standard shock and springs and not bother lowering it?

Right spoke to GSF and they do the BOGE suspension kit for £159 + VAT and that includes drop 40mm springs and complete front struts. They also do the set with just inserts for the front at £149 + VAT for the sake of £11.75 including VAT I might as well get the complete struts.

This would seem to me to be the best deal unless anyone knows any different.
