Gt tdi engine life?
« on: 21 April 2011, 23:21 »
Hi,

I have been looking at getting a mk4 gt tdi (hopefully an anniversary) for a while now.
All the cars I have seen have around 120k on the clock I know this is about right for the age but I can't help but wonder how much life is left in the engine?
Also Will there be any large bills looming?

Any thoughts and help would be appreciated

Thanks

Rob.

120k is nothing for a TDI if it has been looked after.

Why an anniverasy model mate? They look the nuts but they aint no faster or better road holding thaan a stock gt tdi. But tbh the only decent handling mk4 golf is the r32.

Im on 141k

Had to replace gearbox twice, the original one and the diff bearings went on it and replaced with a second hand one which blew a hole out the side of the diff from the bellhousing side  :undecided: and replaced with another secondhand one, touch wood its going great. Also replaced the clutch and conversion solid flywheel when the box was off. Also had to replace a drivers sdie drive shaft as whe i went to a test drive after the gearbox was changed the first time it snapped for some strange reason.

I have also replaced brake discs all round and handbrake cables, new exhaust centre section  (This sort of stuff is expected) taken the calipers apart and greaed them up, drivers rear is know to be a sticky one.

Replaced the thermostat and due to being a tool and not covering my alternator i had to replace the alternator and while i was at it changed the belt.

But apart from that  i haven had anything else. The gearbox and clutch and flywheel was the most expensive thing i had to change but i also only bought my car with 116 on the clock and very limited previous owner history.

But in all honesty i love the car to bits, easy on diesel returning easily 60mpg, seen 68mpg on the motorway one day tippin along at 60mph..Everything depends on the previous owner, if they were hard on the car you can expect to have to spend a few quid on it.

I want an anniversary model simply because of how it looks.
I'm looking for a nice looking reliable car that is still fun to drive. I think the anniversary ticks all the boxes!!
