corroded brake discs
« on: 20 April 2011, 21:21 »
my car passed it's mot recently...but got an advisory note that the front brake discs were corroded...had a look myself and the outside 10mm (on the inside of the discs) does look slightly pitted...but wouldn't have said badly corroded

bought my first car 30 years ago and have never had to replace brake discs...maybe just been lucky

my gti is 4 years old with 45k miles on the clock...do you think it's time to replace them...or are the stealers "at it"...?

the pads look good...do I need to replace both pads and discs at the same time...?

when it comes to passing or failing the mot...is the level of corrosion purely subjective to the tester's opinion/mood...?

any thoughts appreciated...thank you

Can't say for sure as driving style and whether they are left for long periods when wet will have an adverse affect but you're averaging 11,250 miles a year which isn't low by any stretch.

For comparision, my car is 4.5 years old and has done 60k miles and the fronts discs are fine and the rears have about 2-3k miles left on them by all accounts.

Hey there isn't a advisory for corroded discs any more on a mot it's just a straight fail or pass and if the tester feels the need he could write a manual advise out to point this issue out. And yes always replaced pads with new if fitting new discs. New pads can be fitted without new discs.
