Why does my valver rev so high?

Is this common?

When the car is started, it revs to about 2000 rpm b4 settling out at 1000.

Surely it cant be good for the engine, being revved from cold.....

Does every 16v do this?

If not , how can i stop it, is it something to do with the isv?

Yeah my valver does this aswell.  The last bloke who owned it had it from new and said that he brought this issue up with the dealership and they said this was correct function and that there is no need for any accelerator pedal action when starting (from hot or cold).  Does it do it when hot aswell?

its an age thing. they do this when they get a bit older.

if you change the distributor pack, coil, and most of your fuel system it wont do it. bit extreme for a non fault.

reving from cold - you should stay under 3k in theory until the oil temperature starts reading on the MFA. You shouldnt really be in megamode until about 85degrees.

rising to 2k then settling down to idle is std operating on the 16v

its part of the cold start process, on startup the rev's will rise to 2k before settling down to idle. as said a dirty ISV can make it rise and hold that bit higher/longer. try cleaing out the ISV with petrol or cellulose thinners

i also assume part reasoning behind this is to make sure there is a initial good oil flow round the top of the head

if you want to experiment. disconnect the ISV and try and start your car in the morning by just turning the key - you'll find it aint easy to start and it sure as hell wont idle!!

If its supposed to do it then thats cool, i may give the isv a clean out anyways.

@ tinman - it never gets revved past 3k until engine is warm m8 

@ thedentist55 - it doesnt happen when warm, no.
