Gatso question
« on: 08 September 2003, 11:07 »
Hi
I had the unfortunate experience of being double flashed by a gatso yesterday morning. However I was travelling towards the camera on the other side of the road to the white line markings. After talking to some friends yesterday afternoon it turns out two of them have been had by the same camera in the last week again travelling towards the camera on the other side of the road. My question is this: Has anybody else had this experience? Does it count as the camera is meant to be triggered by a vehicle moving away from it? Will the speed measurement be valid as I wasn't on the same side of the road as the markings? Any advice would be apprieciated so I know whether to prepare myself for the dreaded letter dropping on my doormat.
Cheers
Toby

Hi Toby,

No need to worry, you definitely won't be getting a letter :)

The camera's do that when they have a dummy unit inside that isn't taking pictures. It still reacts to the speed and also gets triggered by cars on the other side of the road, as you were.

Cheers,

jv

Now i'm sure I read somewhere that taking a picture of the vehicle from a Gatso from the front cannot be used as evidence.

Thats why they turn em around.

I read a long time ago its something to do with privacy and a degree of saftey also.

Imagine sitting by the side of the road flashing your camera in drivers faces - wonder how long it would take Plod to turn up? Same goes for Gatso...

Plus there is the question of the person sitting next to you and a whole complex legal/liberty matter/argument that I can't quite remember.

Anyway, i've had many pictures of the front of my car, and I've concluded its the back that matters.

Cheers modulater, very useful website. It seems that gatsos are quite often triggered by vehicles travelling in the opposite direction but as they aren't designed to operate in that manner prosecution is extremely unlikely. I'll breathe a sigh of relief and remember the camera is there in future.

If they are triggered by vehicles going in the wrong direction it is because they are a dummy unit and will not be taking pictures. They can however, be changed at any time for a functioning unit, so just because you have seen it taking 'dummy' shots one day doesn't mean it will always be like that :)
