Removing sunroof mk2 3 door
« on: 19 April 2011, 19:14 »
ive searched on here but came up with nothing that seemed to help me. Im hoping to remove the sunroof and all its mechs from my gti and replace with a shaped piece of poly tigersealed on.

Its a track car so the aim is to reduce the centre of gravity and lose unneccesary weight.

Is there a how to someone as i would like to do it without having to cut it out from inside. My rooflining is already removed.

if you just wanna change the seal its very easy, open sunroof slightly, pull down trim (it has 4 metal clips) undo 4 screws at the front (2 each side) then 4 screw at the back (2 each side) unclip the metal clips from under the rollers and lift the roof out.
Be carefull as you remove the roof as there is a water trap at the back of the roof that A might have water in it and B can scratch the roof if you catch it.
Once the trim is off from inside the sunroof tho its all very self explanetary and just common sense..

you can remove the panel as said above but its the framework inside where all the weight is. it all weighs 9kg so worthwhile!

chris, its easy to scratch the panel on removal so be careful!

And pay attention as you are taking it apart so you are sure how it all goes back together, and make a mental note that the long screws go in the front and the short screws go in the back DONOT get this bit wrong or ull end up trashing your roof!.

there's a decent guide in the maintenance section. lay a towel out on the roof when removing so you can put the panel on that and wrap it up.
when refitting make sure the plastic bits on the rear part of the mechanism line up with the metal clips.

in good time maybe. 4 years left in this country before i go australia on a working holiday visa so i dont think funds will stretch to a full cage an carbon in that time.

cheers for the info, will check the maintenance section for full removal.
