Ive had my golf for almost 11 years now last year i got a new engine it is the same engine (pb). Recentley it has has an intermittant missfire in 4th and 5th gear at around 3000rpm when i come off the throttle it stops and when i floor it it goes throught it. It only does it when the engine is warm and when there is less than quarter a tank of fuel in it, i also noticed the when it happens the voltage reading on the guage dropes to about 9volts.

I have replaced the plugs, plug leads, distributer cap, rotor arm, fuel filter, the MAF all the earths to the engine and box.

Can anyone help, any answers will be appretiated.

its not engine related if the voltage drops to 9v, its electrical. what wire is the gauge connected to behind the dash?

The voltage vdo is connected to an ignition live and the earth terminal under the steering colum im sure the isnt the problem though because the votage vdo has only been there for a few weeks the mis has been there for a few months

what i meant was the vdo has picked up an electrical fault which is causing the missfire, not that the missfire was caused byn the vdo ;)

the voltage from the fusebox should never drop that low!  go back to your VDO wiring and tell us exactly where you spliced it, and to what colours. then we can hopefully figure out why the voltage is dropping and so solve the problem

Ive not got around to check it yet.

The vdo is connected to a thick red wire coming from the ignition barrel wich is only live when the ignition is on and is earthed to the body.

My mistake it acctuall comes from a black wire from the ignition barrel which is only live when the ignition is on
