Bit of advice - OE vs replacement clutch
« on: 17 April 2011, 23:37 »
So I'm buying some replacement parts, the biggie being a clutch kit. OE for £78, unspecified manufacturer for £55. Will I live to regret it if I use the non-OE replacement?

My car has 59k miles on the clock, so I'm right in thinking it's probably not a bad idea to do the clutch - especially as the transmission is already off? And I want a clutch kit rather than just a clutch plate I take it?

unspecified manufacturer for £55.

for the £23 differance i would not fit a clutch from an unspecifyed manufactuer.

LUK, SACH  are both good clutches but unbranded ones breack very easly  and you'll never get a refund on the cutch let allone the work fittign it
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Hmm, OE or named brand. Sounds like good advice. One of them says make: "OE replacement"...is that OE or just some knock off do you think?

Where is the best place to buy? I have looked on euro car parts, GSF, and car-partsonline. The car is a '97 mk3 engine code AEX. Gah, with VAT everything is more than £100!

I can only find a self-adjusting clutch cable for engine codes ABD/ABU. Reckon that will work for an AEX?

As above, go for branded clutch, i would buy a sachs.
Clutch is a job job you only want to do once.

I had a mk3 1.4 AEX mate, Sachs defiantly a safe bet, but i did opt for a Transmech and to be honest seemed good enough quality and had no problem with it in two years.

All good advice, thanks chaps.

I was talking with my old man and he reckons at 60k miles the clutch should still be OK... it hasn't been misbehaving yet, so I guess it could be...? When do these things wear out? Seeing as I'm a bit strapped for cash I might just leave it until next time...
