Can a dealer bump a order or does it just have to wait for the factory to get its finger out? also is there a rough timeline from order to getting a build week. Reason is my car is due a service and needs 2 rear tyres in a few months. Don,t want to pull money out when I,,m trading it in

Car ordered 29th Sept 2010 - just got a chassis number today. So the car was built this week. Now all I need is a delivery date. Not long now.

Ordered my GTD with DSG on 30 Sept 2010. Was told delivery 16 to 20 weeks, but more likely 20.  Had a commission number in October.  It was only at the beginning of May 2011 that I got a confirmed build date that had been put back to week build 27 (4 July).  I was informed yesterday that my car is now on build week 24, NEXT WEEK.

I was in a similar position - Big (4 year) service coming up, cambelt change and MOT was due on my mk5 after the delivery date for my GTD initially indicated by the dealer.

I contacted them, pointed out I'd been a customer of theirs for many years and asked if they would contribute to towards the cost that I wouldn't have facing if my car had been delivered when I'd expected it to be. The dealer agreed to pay for the cambelt change, the MOT and half the service cost. They're also standing by the trade in value they quoted me back in November for an April delivery, which now looks like being July (car should be built next week!)   Might be worth speaking to your dealer if your current car is a VW and you're trading it in.

Alternatively. it'd be worth checking with your dealer to see if you're entitled to a free loan car. I don't know if VW still offer this, but the arrangement used to be that they would provide you with a free loan car if you hadn't got your car 16 weeks after ordering it (or might have been from the date the factory confirmed acceptance of order; sorry, can't remember). However, with all the current build delay problems, they may no longer do this, but if they do, it could save you some of your forthcoming maintenance costs.

It is a good practical automobile. But knowing you, you'd be fed up with it after a couple of weeks as it's no GTD, not by a long margin. Personally, I'd wait a bit and dream of the day you get that wonderful car. Don't serve your young son with a Tiguan. He'll be disappointed in you and will grow up either hating you or end up with bad taste just like his dad who bought a Tiguan.

Oh, and don't become an old man before your time, please.
