changing an oil pump
« on: 14 April 2011, 20:23 »
I have been having problems with oil pressure on my mk2,To date i have changed all the sensors added a vdo just to double check and today it had a flush and oil filter change as well as i took the sump off and cleaned the pick up etc.

Anyway i put it all back together and its still the sodding same,I have just ordered a new oil pump which its something i should have done in the first place.

im getting 3.5 bar from cold which goes down to 1 bar when warm which then sets my dash light flashing.

I get the basic principle of changing it as i had a look today,I would just like to know if theres anything i can mess up while im doing it.

cheers

Prime it!!........cover the pick up in vaseline and fill it with oil and so it doesn't all dribble out then spin the shaft clockwise.

Check out this link, just wish I had

I couldn't honestly say but Id imagine it would get sucked up as soon as the pump span then "melted" once the oil got hot?! i'm completely guessing though

Or fit a new pump then remove the coil lead and spin it over untill the lamp goes out.

Do you mean spin the engine over as in try to start it with the key or spin it over by hand? And by lamp do you mean oil pressure light on dash?

You should do yes.

I'm a big fan of the disconencting the coil and building up oil pressure on the starter. Much easier with a dash pressure guage as well as you can see it building. Once it's got some healthy pressure, connect the coil up and spark it into life.

other oprion is to make something up to allow you to drive the pump shaft direct from a drill or something. leave out one of the pressure switches then when you see oil coming out you know you have pressure.

before i fit oil pumps i submerge the pickup in oil, then pour more oil in the top in the gear holes. then spin the shft by hand till the oil comes out the top. i then just chuck it on quickly without bothering with the vaseline, always worked for me anyway

vasteline is a rover V8 trick as they don't self prime ever.

VW pumps are very good at self primeing unless there f**ked.     I made a shaft to drive them from an old dizzy to drive them from cordless drill,  so can ether prime the pump before fitting   or fit the pump dry,  refit the sump and fill with oil   then pop the dizzy out and spin the pump with cordless drill.

when you hear the drill clutch rattel or feel a lot of extra load on the drill the engine has oil pressure.   pulling the king lead and spinning  the starter is perfectly safe on a used engine ( i wouldn't like to do it to one that has just been built tho.)
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
