EA888 engine limits
« on: 14 April 2011, 20:20 »
I have read this from the R forum. LINK
Which i find odd myself after reading the design breifs for the EA888 from VW and their suppliers.

Apparently, the original plan was to use a development of the current GTI's EA888 engine, but it seems that VW engineers are having problems getting that engine to deliver more than 250 bhp without compromising its reliability and longevity . That being the case,
Can i ask your source of this please? As the block, head, all internals according to the official documents were designed and repeatedly extensivly tested for ">100KW/L" and torque of ">175Nm/L"

Yes. Georg Kacher talking to Michael Dick.
Is Michael Dick actually quoted as saying those exact words?
As it does seem odd that the original design documents, test result documents all state it meets the original design criterior of  ">100KW/L" and torque of ">175Nm/L" for >300,000Km.
Sorry to take so long to reply to your question Snoop',

Michael Dick is quoted as saying that 5-cylinder engine will definitely be used across both VW and Audi models. Issues with 2.0-litre EA888 not being good beyond 230 bhp comes from VW engine chief and VW Scirocco performance in 2010 Nurbergring 24-hour race, which is why they've gone for the 5-cylinder engine in 2011 and not 300 bhp version of EA888.
Gone from more than 250 down to 230 even further away from the design minimum spec it was designed too..

So what does this mean in layman's terms?
Lots of blown re-mapped engines?

Doubt it.

I don't use my 260 ish bhp very often , I'm sure most remapped GTIs are driven normally 95% of the time.

If you screw it all of the time then you're asking for trouble, same goes for non mapped engines.

Feel free to wish me a happy thousandth post.

i dont use the full 265 all the time... but I would say it gets used atleast once every journey. Could this be why i experienced so many problems with my car after map?? :undecided:

Mines been problem free with the bluefin. Used at least once a journey too, sometimes the whole journey

Not that often though.

I take it off now and again just so I remember how it was before.

You still REVO'd? Got the insurance sorted now?

Am on REVO stage two with no problems at all! Think people worry too much. Look at the stage 3 guys running 380 bhp without any problems.
