Potentially getting a GTI

Hi guys,

I'm from the mk6 side so be gentle with me!
I've had my mk6 2.0tdi for 7 weeks now, and it's been in the VW garage 7 times since I bought it with various things replaced, and I've given up. Anyway, I'm currently rejecting my car and may possibly swap for an 06 GTI 5 door.
Basically anything I should look out for? My mk6 was from a car supermarket, this GTI is from a main dealer and he is offering a 1 year warranty anyway
It's 2006 on an 06 plate, done 41k and in really good condition, but is there anything I should look out for?

R.e the coil packs, should I ask about them?
I see there was a revised DV due to the old one having tears?
Anything else?
When do these cars need new cam belts? it's 5 years old so I assume it may have been done?

I've had VAG's for the past 4 years, Seats, Audi's and now VW, so I know them pretty well, but always had fast diesels, this'll be my first 'fast' petrol

Thanks for any comments, and please post positive and negative comments about the MK5 GTI, I want to make sure this car is 'the one' ..... well for a few months anyway

i've just come across from having derv's all my driving life.

I've had many SEAT, AUDI, Skoda in past like you

We bought a mk5 GTi which has been good but suffered from the rusty front arches that most seem
to get at some point.

Other than using a bit of oil if opened up it's been pretty good. We average approx 32mpg (off tank)
so cannot complain too much

we do varied driving and whats point in having one if you can't enjoy it

We average between 30 & 34mpg - never had it on a long run....will get one soon

Tank will get you approx 350miles before light comes on.

There are big differneces in spec - try to get a few toys as it will aid resale in future

i.e leather, sat nav, xenons, highline computer

My old Cupra, 1.4tsi 7 Speed DSG only used to get 270 miles to a tank driving steady, so that's an improvement
I do alot of town driving and my diesel just uses the fuel, £40 of fuel gets me about 300 miles.

the best derv's i've owned have been BMW - Very good engines that pull all the way through range
and handling to match

My last car was Octavia VRS PD - nice car but traded it for the mk5 GTi

Searched for right car and it never fails to impress. The reviews say it all (see EVO magazine)

my MK2 is the weekend toy - more of an ongoing project TBH

The mk5 GTI is a class motor car.
Buying from a VW dealer you should be OK. Ask for VW service history if possible.

You get what you pay for.

I’ve had my GTI for 4 months now and still get excited at the thought of driving it

There are quite a few optional extras for the GTI to look out for such as:
Monza II 18" Alloy Wheels
Leather Seats
Sat Nav
Highline Display
Multi Function Steering Wheel
Arm Rest (which can include a 6 CD changer or iPod Dock)
Rear Parking Sensors
Cruise Control
Sunroof

I get about 20-25mpg but I only do short journeys. You should be able to get 30-35 on longer journeys (dependent on if you get lead foot syndrome).

It’s a brilliant car, you will enjoy it
