Clamping number plate..
« on: 11 April 2011, 20:10 »
Hi all, I have a mk3 golf and I'm trying to get my plates to stick to my mk3 golf!

I've tried using the number plate tape from halfords and while it sticks fine in the middle, the sides of the plate does'nt stick (due to the plates being straight and the bumper having a slight curve)

So I've bought some stuff similar to No More Nails' strongest stuff.. While this will do a good job of sticking it, I can't sit there and hold the plates on for long enough!

I've looked into buying G Clamps to hold the plates against the bumper while it dries, but  they wouldn't fit in the gap under the bumper and reach up to the number plate recess..

So does anyone have any ideas on how I can keep the plates pushed against the bumper? I'm sure it's very simple, but my brain isn't working tonight :)

Thanks!

Use meths to clean all the old crap off the bumper.

Then use trim tape to stick them on.

Or screw them on

Tie a peice of string round the edge of the plate, tension the string till the plate curves to the same as the bumper, heat the clear side of the plate with a hot air gun to "reset" the plastic to the shape of the bumper, when cooled, remove the string, and re attach the plate to the bumper with the sticky pads, (you need 5 pads in total), then use a couple of blobs of the adhesive you have as insurance... this is how I do BMW No plates, only without the adhesive, never had one fall off yet

Thanks for the advice! I'll have a crack at getting 'em to stick at the weekend. :)
