VR6 getting a bit hot?
« on: 11 April 2011, 13:33 »
My mk2 VR was running for about 20 mins yesterday at standstill, in which time the temp gauge rose to about 2/3 up the dial. The fans kicked in as normal (at half way) but the temp kept climbing. The fans ran for about 3 or 4 minutes after i switched the engine off. when i opened the bonnet i realised that although it hadnt boiled over, it was getting very toasty in there!

im using a standard VR6 rad and VR6 fans, and a 2 month old 80 degree thermostat. I believe the system is bled thoroughly.

The only other thing to note is that there is some k-seal in the system, due to a leaky heater matrix which is now leaking again (due to be replaced).

Why would the coolant be getting so hot despite the fans running flat out? and why did it take so long to cool down? the engine runs smoothly as it should. Any easy checks?

cheers

chris

Is yours running the aux water pump.

Its fitted but I will check its runs by running 12v through it.

Cheers RJ its not long been bled (milage wise) but will bleed again soon as the matrix wants changing anyway.

also worth noting that when moving, the temp gauge will sit at just under 80 degrees, rather than 90 (which is half way). Other VR's and mk3's I've seen have sat at half way and rarely moved  :undecided:

Yes but the cool stat will or should be dropping the temp.

Surely this isn't a bad thing, it was a very warm day yesterday and the rad wasn't getting the cool air it would do if the car was moving???

check over the rest of the system as per the guide, in particular make sure water sprays from the thin hose on the tank when you rev it. id be worried the waterpump may be tired from the symptoms, though the fact it drops to 80 suggests its ok?

yep on a run it always stays just below 80. It just worried me seeing that it got up to 110 ish and the fans didnt seem to be bringing the temp under control as quickly as i'd have wanted. A coraddo i knew would sit at 90 deg all day long.

speaking to TPS an 80 deg stat is the norm.

I've always been told between 80-90 is ideal for the 16v, don't know if that's different for a VR6.

I took my car to Woburn a while back and while sitting still with the engine running wtched the temperature creep up and up to 112 degrees at it's highest, although it seemed to move between 106 and 109.  I put a thing up on (i think) this forum and was told not to worry.  I also spoke to my mechanic friend who said not to worry at all.

i take it you're referring to engine oil temperature on the MFA and not coolant temperature. My MFA doesnt work so i have no idea what the oil temp is.
