Mid term adjustment, think I got shated by HIC
« on: 04 April 2011, 14:45 »
Right, i'll firstly start on a positive that so far since i've been with HIC I couldn;t fault them, the price was brilliant and service was great, they email all the docs promptly and generally a pleasure to deal with so not all is bad.

The problem I have had is that on Saturday I changed my vehicle from a MK4 Golf GTTDi 130 on an 02 plate which is insurance group 13 to a 1.6 Honda Civic Sport which is insurance group 6.
So naturally one would assume, half the insurance group mean a reduction regardless of how small but definately a reduction right?

Answer is NO!

I called and they advised me that my monthly instalment between of £40.35 is going up to just under £150 between now and September.
Now can someone for the love of god explain why on earth this would happen? Also may I add that the Golf was also declared as remapped, so if you was to compare the two cars there is alot between them making the Honda a cheaper option in insurance eyes.

I just can;t understand how it can go up so much especially when the car is half the insurance group and also not even really a sports car anymore as the Sport aspect of the Civic is only a cosmetic thing as all the 1.6's have the same poke in the 55 plate.

I feel really hard done by :(

Thing it they've got you by the nuts eitherway.  Insurance costs have gone a lot in recent months so take that into account, but that does seem excessive.  Might be worth price checking the car on confused.com, etc and then ring them back (assuming it is cheaper elsewhere) and see what they say.

It's because your original policy would of being specialised (for modified cars etc) and the scheme won't be standard car friendly (or honda friendly?)

I have just paid a few £££ for changing over with 2 months of my policy left (I could get 6 months+ insurance elsewhere for the same price!!)...... You could cancel and start again  (If your policy has over 6 months to run or you need the ncb thats what I would do)

Hi Asif,

I have had a look into this for you.

As VW’s are one of the types of vehicle HIC specialise in, they often qualify extra discounts that we have arranged with our underwriters to try and ensure we are competitive on the types of vehicle we choose to specialise in.

Unfortunately as we do not specialise in Honda's so they are not eligible for the same discounts and due to poor claims stats, often attract higher rates with some of our underwriters.

In addition to this you have lost an ownership discount you were getting for having owned the car over a year and the Civic is insured for a higher value than the Golf was.

Unfortunately these factors mean that despite the lower grouping, in this instance the underwriter we have placed you with are a lot more competitive on the Golf.

Regards,

Martin

As you guys have stated it's because the insurance I was on was a specialist one being a DUB and also a forum discount but that's all gone now :(
Still really dear and quite a masive jump on price.
