V5 is an okay engine... just in the wrong golf.

If there was a V5 in a MK2 it would kick a 1.8 MK2's arse, however in a MK4 or a Beetle they're just gay.

I'd prefer to think that the V5 engine in the Beetle dilutes the car's perceived gayness a little. It certainly makes it faster (in a straight line) than a MK2 16 valver, despite the extra weight etc.
