Mk4 - Clutch / Slave cylinder?
« on: 03 April 2011, 21:57 »
2000 mk4 2.0 golf. Earlier today I renewed the clutch, pressure plate and release bearing in the gearbox. Major pain in the ass for removal and reinstall. After placing everything back together and trying the clutch, the slave cylinder is now leaking fluid everywhere and does not seem to function what so ever. Which I found odd as it came off perfectly working...

Now I am wondering if I have done something wrong putting the gearbox back together, as shouldn't the car be in gear if I place the car into gear? The wheels can still be spun by hand and also with revs there is no power on the wheels what so ever...

I completely removed the slave cylinder and tried placing it into gear with the same effects no drive to the wheels at all I thought the slave cylinder disengages the clutch from the gearbox. Please advice?

Did you align the clutch properly?

Yes with the tube through the middle, there was no problem getting the box shaft back into the engine.

Release bearing and lever fitted correctly?
You might need to remove the box again to check everything.

Everything came off and went on exactly the same, so I would say yes it is correctly fitted. I have done gearboxes before a many years ago so not a complete novice. The first pump straight away started leaking oil from where the pipe goes into the cylinder, maybe the cylinder has given way to the pressure of the new pressure plate as it has done 100k+ on this pressure plate.
