jetta 1600 engine pressure
« on: 31 March 2011, 11:08 »
right. i bought a 1600 jetta tx. when i got it the heater bypass valves were broke. so sorted that problem out and sorted out the thermostat, it was stuck open. then for a few days it was sweet. the fun stops there. on my way home from work and the engine overheated, so i pulled over checked it the water pressure was immence. stupidly took off the filler cap (burning my hand). i had blown the head gasket from the cylinder to the closest water channel. did the work needed (head WASNT warped, block was good too) put the car back together and tesed it. same problem. I'm guessing a water cavity has blown somewhere as again i bled up the system and left the water cap off. water just kept bubbling rapidly. so took my nose to it and all i could smell was exhaust fumes.

anyone got any ideas on what has happened? iv been told that these engines are bulletproof so i have no idea.

i should add that when i bought the car the last owner had no anti freeze and it was frozen often on cold morning starts. ( i no my bad but had to get to work)

any help welcome....

thankyou

Possibly the oil cooler? I could be way off the mark with that, but they can give the symptoms of a hg failure ie oil in water or water in oil, and possibly the fumey smell in your h20..

they are tough engines  but as with anythign if you try hard enough for long enough you will manage to f**k it.

it bubbeling the top tank so it's leacking,   tho you say the head wasent warped did you have it skimmed as they can distort around the cyl or where the blow was without the whoel head warping.

skim the head get the block shiney and put it back down with new gasket and bolts.   if you skimmed the head last time it chould have done somethign nasty so id bin it and find another head and skim that and refit ( would suggest pressure testing your existing one but 1.6 heads are cheeper )
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Surely better to replace 1.6 with a 1.8 driver than to pay for head skimming, sundries and your time titting about?
