MFD2 or 3?
« on: 29 March 2011, 13:01 »
 Hi everyone

im thinking of buying a TDI GT which has the factory RNS510 installed. Its in a June 09 car, would this be the MFD3 or the 2? Is there a way of telling visually?

also, assuming its the MFD3 - do all these units accept the latest firmware (7 digit postcodes etc) or are there 'older' 3's that can only be reprogrammed to a certain level?

finally, adding bluetooth - which it currently doesnt have. whats the cheapest and easiest way to add bluetooth functionality, via the MFSW?

cheers

Garry

The MFD2 is a very old stereo from about 2007 and isn't called an RNS510.

The RNS510 and MFD3 are the same thing.

I think the question you're looking for is do you have an A version, B version or C version?

The C version is the latest and there is also a C version LED - which is the VERY latest.  I don't think these came out until early 2010 though.  There is a button combo you can hold down when turning the stereo on that will tell you which version you have.  I'll have a hunt around for it and post it in a minute - unless someone beats me to it!

Looks like its just a case of holding SETUP when you turn it on for 20 seconds.

cheers buddy - im going to view the car on Friday so cant tell you yet,

so, if worst case it was a 'A' version, would that mean it couldnt be firmwared to the latest maps etc?

what i would really be looking for is 7 digit postcode and the ability to add POI's (speed cams etc)

cheers

An 'A' version can still get the most of the later firmwares that allow for things like 32gb memory card support.  It can also take the latest VW Maps 7 disk - which enables the 7 digit postcode search.

Have a look on vwnavi.com for more info
There are some 'custom' firmwares on there that'll run new software on older stereos.

The only downside seems to be 'Regensberg Syndrom' - which is where the Sat Nav always thinks its in Germany when its powered on - and take a few mins to get a GPS lock to tell where it really is.
To be honest - I think June 2009 is past 'A' versions anyway.
