Which book?
« on: 29 March 2011, 09:11 »
Looking to buy a book to brush up on my photography skills.

Has anyone got any suggestions? I'm looking at this series:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/0321678737/ref=aw_d_detail?pd=1&qid=1301384597&sr=8-2

Don't mind something a bit more technical. As that series seems like it helps you in certain situations that you can transfer to other situations. But doesn't explain some of the techy parts.

i looked at that but opted for this one
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collins-Complete-Photography-Course-Garrett/dp/0007279922/ref=pd_ybh_2?pf_rd_p=138755991&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1501&pf_rd_i=ybh&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=00WAAWZPERAN90EMYKC2

I've been meaning to go to waterstones or somewhere for a look for a book to aid me too. Had a look on Amazon for a few books specific for my camera, but a lilke you I am after something that can give me transferable skills. Someone at work has lent me:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Photography-Masterclass-Photographic-Image-manipulation/dp/1405315563/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301393444&sr=8-1

Language is a bit flowery bit its quite easy to read (only 1 chapter in).

only just seen this thread

I find that most of the 'learn' / 'course' books are very generic with most of the information being on the web; that said they are great to thumb through in bed / whilst on the loo

I'd thoroughly recommend

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1905814046/ref=oss_product

and (for anyone using on camera flash)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1584282584/ref=oss_product

this book is great for those using RAW

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Real-World-Camera-Adobe-Photoshop/dp/0321713095/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1301396107&sr=1-1

but like Stronz says, go to waterstones, thumb through them then order from amazon

Now there's a point - which memory card did you go for? I dont think I can afford / will need an SDXC, but I am thinking of getting a slightly faster SDHC than I already have, in a bigger size. Considering this;

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sandisk-Digital-Extreme-Capacity-SDSDX3-008G-E31/dp/B001G87S1Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I27KD0C0HH0PEH&colid=2AEIG6PGORNLZ

Size isn't too crucial for me, as whilst I am away I am goign to download all my pictures every night and upload them to my NAS at home over the interweb, so will always have a fresh memory card each day.

Sorry for the hi-jack!

I use this card

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-Secure-Digital-Card-Class/dp/B0043WKZHO/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1301398425&sr=1-3

Got a basic sandisk one when I bought my camera so I could use it straight away. It's very useful to have a couple.
