new wheels
« on: 27 March 2011, 18:39 »
I bought this car about two weeks ago, it's a mk4 1.8t gti. Now it's my first golf, and please bare in mind know bugger all about cars. But I'm slowly learning!

From what I understand the dealer said this has been lowered at some point and all i can see on the springs is "APEX" I presume this is the manufacture.  Can anyone tell me how far this looks like it's been lowered by? Also I want to change the wheels to some 18s with low profile tyres. What do I need to look for when buying and/or will they fit considering the car has apparently been lowered without rubbing on wheel arches?

Below are some pics of the car. Thanks guys!

Nice motor.  Looks straight and clean

The front looks a tad lower than the rear.  I'd estimate a 35/40mm spring kit.

18s should be fine with the correct profile tyre (40).... I'm sure one of the alloy wheel oracles will soon post a definitive reply on wheel/tyre selection

Yes looks to be a 40mm drop, 18"s will be fine if the correct offset and tyres are used.

 Thankyou, I'm pretty happy with it, beige leather, climate control (although I don't know exactly how it all works as there was no manual for the car) electric sunroof, lovely! I just put a Kenwood KDC-BT51U in it yesterday as it had the stock radio in it which is awesome.

Pretty chuffed on the fuel economy too. just need a few little tweaks i.e. few stone chips, and a good clean of the leather (which is my job tomorrow to do on my day off!)

** Eagerly awaits an alloy/wheel guru to come to my aid!** I'd be looking secondhand and not a fortune (the wife to be would go overly nuts as we're getting marries in June!)

Also the BBS alloys that are on it, they're in ok nick, bit flakey in places but overall in good condition how much do they generally go for secondhand?

Thanks Wayne, sorry if I seem really dumb, offset? and when you say tyres do you mean the width or height profile of the tyres? You 'll have to explain as if you're explaining to a child as I really aren't clued up on this kind of stuff!

Offset will be a et number around 35 is what you need really, tyres 225/40/18's is the best size to use.

I did see them, however I've been trying to find a picture of a black golf that has similar wheels to see what it would look like?

EDIT : The other half dissaproves of the white......
